The Importance and Blessings of Aqiqah

Welcoming a newborn into the world is one of life’s greatest blessings. In Islamic tradition, this momentous occasion is marked by the practice of Aqiqah—an act of sacrifice, gratitude,and devotion.

“Every child is held in pledge for his Aqiqah, which is sacrificed for him on his seventh day, and his head is shaved and he is named.”

What is Aqiqah?

Aqiqah refers to the sacrifice of livestock (such as sheep or goats) to mark the birth of a child. Typically performed on the 7th day after birth (or subsequently on the 14th, 21st, or any later date), it is a highly recommended practice (Sunnah Mu’akkadah) that carries immense spiritual, personal, and communal benefits. For a Boy is 2 sheep/goats and for girl is 1 sheep/goat.

Meaning and Practice

• Aqiqah: A sacrificial animal (usually a sheep, goat, or cow) given in charity for a newborn, in gratitude for the child’s birth.

• Seventh day: The Sunnah specifies the seventh day after birth for the Aqiqah, head shaving, and naming.

• Head shaving: Symbolic of gratitude and the removal of the “burden” of birth; the hair is often given as charity.

• Naming: The child is given a name on this day, as part of the Sunnah.

Why is Aqiqah Important?

1. Expressing Gratitude to Allah (SWT)

Children are an Amanah (a sacred trust) and a gift from Allah. Performing Aqiqah is a direct way for parents to demonstrate humility and thankfulness for the blessing of a healthy child and a safe delivery.

2. Following the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ)

Carrying out the Aqiqah honors the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), who performed it for his grandsons, Hasan and Husain (RA). Following his Sunnah brings barakah (blessings) into the newborn’s life from the very beginning.

3. Spiritual Protection for the Child

Islamic scholars highlight that the Aqiqah serves as a means of spiritual safeguarding, seeking Allah’s protection for the baby from harm and negative influences as they grow.

4. Sharing Joy and Feeding the Community

A central part of Aqiqah is distributing the meat. By sharing portions with family, neighbors, and the less fortunate, it fosters unity, spreads joy, and provides nourishment to those in need.

Why performing Aqiqah in Zimbabwe?
